Both MBR and SBR are proven, widely-deployed STP technologies for commercial buildings. But they serve different use cases.
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
MBR combines biological treatment with membrane filtration in a single step. It produces high-quality effluent suitable for toilet flushing, cooling tower makeup, and landscape irrigation without additional polishing.
Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)
SBR runs biological treatment in sequential batches — fill, aerate, settle, decant. Lower CAPEX than MBR but requires more footprint and produces lower-quality effluent without polishing.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Parameter | MBR | SBR |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint | Very compact | Larger |
| Effluent quality | Excellent (reuse grade) | Good (with polishing) |
| CAPEX | Higher | Lower |
| O&M complexity | Medium-high (membrane care) | Medium |
| Best for | Hotels, IT parks with reuse | Residential complexes |
