Food & Beverage

FSSAI-compliant process water. Product quality protected at every stage.

In food and beverage manufacturing, water is an ingredient. Its quality directly affects product safety, flavour, shelf life, and FSSAI compliance. NWPL treats it accordingly.

Industry Challenges

What makes food & beverage water treatment complex.

Every industry has unique water treatment requirements. Understanding these sector-specific challenges is the starting point for every NWPL project.

FSSAI requires all water used in food processing — for washing, mixing, cooking, and equipment cleaning — to meet IS 10500 potable water standards with additional pathogen limits.

High TDS groundwater (common in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat food processing belts) imparts off-tastes to products and causes equipment scaling that reduces production uptime.

Beverage manufacturers require RO-grade water with conductivity <50 µS/cm for consistent flavour profiles — daily TDS variation in municipal supply is not acceptable.

Food processing effluent has very high BOD (5,000–15,000 mg/L) from organic waste — far above standard industrial ETP capability, requiring high-rate biological systems.

Oil and grease from food processing (dairy, edible oil, meat processing) forms surface films that choke biological treatment — dissolved air flotation (DAF) is essential for these applications.

Compliance Requirements

FSSAI, IS 10500, and CPCB — three compliance frameworks, one integrated system.

NWPL systems are designed to meet every applicable standard for your sector — from the day of commissioning.

FSSAI 2011, Regulation 2.1.1

Water used in food processing must meet IS 10500:2012 potable water standards

BIS IS 10500:2012

Drinking water specification: turbidity <1 NTU, TDS <500 mg/L, faecal coliform absent

CPCB General Standards

Effluent discharge: BOD ≤30, COD ≤250, Oil & Grease ≤10 mg/L

ISO 22000:2018 (FSMS)

Food Safety Management System — water quality as critical control point (CCP)

HACCP (Codex Alimentarius)

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points — water as potential contamination pathway

Beverage Plant WTP — 500 KLD, Pune

River water (turbidity 120 NTU) converted to FSSAI-compliant process water at 0.3 NTU, conductivity 35 µS/cm. Zero FSSAI audit non-conformances in 2 years. Product complaint rate down 40%.

Dairy ETP with DAF — 300 KLD, Nashik
300 KLD ETP

Dairy ETP with DAF — 300 KLD, Nashik

Outlet BOD consistently <25 mg/L from inlet BOD of 4,200 mg/L. Oil & grease removed from 850 to <8 mg/L via DAF. MPCB consent maintained without conditions.
